Should you use biotin for hair loss ?

Nobody want to lose their hair. It’s something that we’ve seen our parents go through, and when the time comes for us to start dropping locks or losing thickness we want to do something that can help us fight off the oncoming symbol of age. We don’t like feeling old, or looking like it. That’s Why hair loss is such a hot topic these days.
Currently there is a variety of solutions for hair loss, From commercial products to natural substances. But if you look at most of the hair loss products, you’ll find one substance that stands out: Biotin. So, what is Biotin? Can we stop hair loss by taking biotin alone?

I’ve researched the forums for months now, to find real testimonials of people, to find out if it really works, and for whom.
So Let’s start by understanding what is Biotin.

What is Biotin? What are its benefits?

Biotin or vitamin B complex is a mineral element that is naturally occurring in foods such as bananas, liver, carrots, yeast and other foods. In a recent Harvard University study, it was shown that biotin is a vital nutrient for preserving hair growth and appearance. The study establishes that an average American eats at least 40 micro grams of this mineral every day, which falls within the set requirements. If your daily consumption of biotin falls below the set range, you may experience biotin deficiency syndrome which may be characterized by hair loss, dermatitis, loss of appetite as well as loss of hair pigment or achromotrichia. Thus biotin may be substantial for your hair loss prevention. Heat tends to destroy the amount of biotin available, so the above foods must be consumed as minimally processed as possible with the exception of eggs.

Biotin is one of the members of the Vitamin B complex family. It is also called vitamin B 7 or vitamin H. The H stands for “haar and haut” which is German for “hair and skin”. Biotin is an important micronutrient needed for many enzymatic reactions in the body. It is especially needed for the metabolism of fats, amino acids, proteins and carbohydrates. Hair loss and poor hair texture are mainly caused, overtime, due to poor synthesis of these nutrients. This causes undernourishment that eventually leads to weakening of hair follicles, brittle nails and rashes all over the skin.

Can Biotin stop hair loss?

But research has not been a hundred percent convincing since other studies claim that there is little evidence to support that biotin intake can effectively treat existing hair loss problems, although many researchers agree that this supplement can prevent the condition from occurring.

Scientists argue that since hair loss can be caused by other problems such as stress, hormonal imbalances as well as other nutrient deficiencies. If possible, consult your doctor to find out the underlying cause of your hair loss problem before you decide to use biotin supplements and other treatments from your drugstore. This will save you from disappointments, especially if you are dealing with permanent baldness problems or when you do not have enough cash. The underlying causes of hair loss problem will determine whether you should use biotin supplements or not.
You should also note that once you lose a hair follicle, you may suffer from permanent baldness. Therefore you should think again before buying biotin supplements.

Hair regrowth and thickening

In other research studies, biotin is also highly favored for the growth of black, blonde as well as many other types of hair. Other online reviews and testimonials from men and women who use biotin for hair loss problems even attest that biotin supplements have helped them with hair thickening than it has for hair loss. But the bottom line is that while the supplement may have helped someone you know, it does not necessarily mean that it can do the same for you.
Whether biotin supplements are going to help your existing hair to thicken, may depend on why your hair thickened in the first place, hereditary issues, your diet, and even your overall health status. So you should consider other factors when using biotin for hair loss. For example, take appropriate measures to keep your hair strong and healthy by eating foods that contain vital nutrients such as proteins, vitamins, fats and carbohydrates.

  • Also, consider seeking your doctor`s advice before using biotin supplements and pills to stay away from drug complications problems and determine the appropriate dosage or use.
    When all is said and done, we can all agree that biotin helps to reduce the risks of developing a nutrient deficiency, which may lead to hair loss. Here is how biotin helps to promote the growth of healthy hair;
  •  It enhances the power of vitamin B. Many experts say that vitamin B tends to give greatest results particularly in the presence of biotin. Thus, you will experience a powerful impact on your hair when you have the combination of these minerals in your body.
  •  Biotin supplements work better than Topical products. Researchers argue that you are likely to experience robust and quicker results when you eat biotin than when you apply other topical treatments on your hair or skin. In addition to that, you are likely to see positive results more rapidly if you eat biotin supplements versus topical applications.
  • It prevents deficiencies. As stated earlier, many studies have established the relationship between biotin deficiency and hair loss problems. You need to find a way to increase your daily biotin intake to avoid losing your hair.
  • It is essential for the growth of healthy skin cells. Various research studies have demonstrated the relationship between biotin use and healthy skin cells. Vitamin B complex promotes the growth of strong and healthy skin cells, which in turn leads to the development of hair follicles that retain hair. Hair follicles tend to weaken and lose the ability to restore with reduced biotin intake.

Recommended dietary allowance of Biotin

There is not enough data to establish the recommended dietary allowance of Biotin. In fact, much research is needed to establish the adequate intake of biotin for adult humans and whatever little is known is has been calculated based on the values of adequate intake in infants. This value has been calculated based on the amount of biotin available in breast milk. In general, women of all ages need to take at least 30 micrograms of Biotin per day. Standard preparations of Biotin are available in 10 mcg, 50 mcg and 100 mcg tablets.

Biotin Toxicity

Biotin in high doses has not been known to be toxic as the excess amount is passed out through the urine. Children and infants with Biotinidase deficiency have been given as much as 200 mg of Biotin per day without any side effects. An upper limit for this vitamin has not been established as yet.
Precautions and side effects

As stated above, Biotin, even at high doses, does not pose any side effects and is non toxic as the excess is passed off through the urine. However, Biotin may react with certain medicines hence it should only be taken under the advice and supervision of a knowledgeable healthcare provider. While biotin does not react with any medicine, its levels can get depleted due to certain drugs such as antibiotics, anti seizure medicines etc. Talk to your doctor if you are taking following medicines:
• Carbatrol
• Dilantin
• Mysoline
• Phenobarbital

Conclusion: Does Biotin really work for hair loss?

Hair loss is not life threatening, but if you choose to do nothing about it then it can progress quickly to the point of baldness. Losing up to 50-100 hairs per day is normal but if you are losing more than that and are seeing hair everywhere; then Biotin can help. Biotin is a relatively inexpensive solution for hair loss compared to costly surgical procedures. Many studies and researches by top scientists have shown that regular supplementation with Biotin as well as topical application in the form of Biotin shampoos and gels can prevent DHT formation and reverse hair loss. Talk to your doctor whether Biotin supplementation can help you.
